LeoVegas MakkerLigaen: A new opportunity for padel players in Denmark

Danish Padel Federation in co-operation with LeoVegas has launched LeoVegas MakkerLigaen, a new nationwide padel tournament that brings together players across clubs and padel centres. This league has been created to give padel players of all levels a structured and competitive platform to develop their game and forge new relationships.

What is LeoVegas MakkerLigaen?

LeoVegas MakkerLiga is a nationwide padel tournament that gives players the opportunity to participate in a structured league regardless of geographical location or playing level. The tournament is organised by the Danish Padel Federation and serves as a supplement to the existing padel leagues in Denmark. The purpose of the league is to create an attractive and flexible tournament format where both amateurs and experienced players can compete in a fair and levelled structure.

The league is divided into 12 regions:

  • North Jutland
  • North West Jutland
  • Midwest Jutland
  • North East Jutland
  • Central East Jutland
  • Southern Jutland
  • Fyn
  • West Zealand
  • Storstrømmen
  • North Zealand
  • The capital city
  • Bornholm

Each region has its own divisions to ensure that players face opponents at their level. The divisions follow the same structure as in the Lunar League and range from Division 1 (level 4.0+) to Series 3 (level 1.0-2.0). New players are placed in a division that best matches their level based on self-assessment and previous tournament participation.

Registration and season structure

Registration for season 1/2025 is open until 1 March, and the season runs from 14 March to 30 June 2025. The league is open to men's, women's and mixed pairs, and participants will have the opportunity to earn ranking points at the end of the season if they have a Danish player licence.

Players can choose their own home ground, giving great flexibility in scheduling matches. Ideally, each pair plays 6 matches - 3 home and 3 away. All division winners get free participation in the next season and an invitation to an exclusive winners' event with prizes and challenging matches against the best players from the other regions.

Match format and rules

Matches are best played in three sets with a tiebreak to 7 in the first and second sets. If a third set is needed, players can choose between a full set or a match tiebreak to 10 points. Matches are played using the golden point rule at 40-40, with the returning pair deciding which side the serve is received from.

To ensure a fair tournament, there is a clear promotion and relegation structure: the top two teams in each pool move up, while the bottom two move down. However, if a division gets a lot of new teams, adjustments may occur so that promoted teams stay in the same division but play stronger opponents.

Technology and communication

MakkerLigaen has its own app where all communication, match scheduling and result reporting takes place. Once registration is closed, all players are divided into divisions and receive information about their matches via the app or SMS. Results are recorded by the winning team directly in the app.

Course booking and responsibilities

It is always the responsibility of the home team to book the pitch, bring balls and pay any associated costs. Matches must be planned well in advance, and the home team is responsible for taking the initiative to make contact. However, the away team is also encouraged to be active in the planning to ensure the smooth running of the matches.

If a pair does not show up for a match without a valid reason, the opposing pair can register a walkover (WO). Should a player get injured, it is possible to bring in a replacement player as long as they do not play in a higher division than the original player.

End of season and prizes

At the end of the season, a winner's tournament is organised in both East and West. The winners of each division are invited to an exclusive event where they compete for prizes and the honour of being among the best in MakkerLigaen. All pool winners receive free participation in the next season.

For more information about the registration process, match structure and rules, interested parties can visit the Danish Padel Federation's official website or contact the league's tournament organisers.
