How to improve your padel game in Aarhus

Most people quickly get good enough to have fun, and then hit a plateau. Here’s what typically takes your game to the next level — and how to get started in Aarhus.

Make use of the wall instead of running away from it

Beginners tend to move away from the back wall because the ball feels lost once it has passed it. It isn’t. Turn sideways, let the ball come out from the glass, and hit it from there. That one adjustment alone will save a large proportion of the balls you currently give up on.

Learn the lob before you learn the smash

Padel is won at the net. The lob is the shot that drives your opponents away from the net and brings you forward. It’s less spectacular than a smash, but it decides far more points.

Stand together with your partner

You must move as a pair, not as two individuals. If one moves forward, the other moves with them. If one is forced back, the other falls back. Most points lost at beginner level occur in the gap between two players who did not move at the same time.

The Bandeja is the battle between the two

When the lob comes your way, the smash is rarely the answer. The bandeja is the controlled shot that keeps you at the net rather than sending you back. It’s also the shot that most people need a coach to help them master.

Play against someone who’s better than you

It’s the cheapest way to train there is. The Aarhus Training Partner Exchange is a Facebook group where you can find training partners and opponents — see the guide Find a padel partner in Aarhus. The centre also organises regular tournaments, where you’re paired up with players you don’t know.

Play more often — it doesn’t have to cost any more

One hour a week is better than more than four hours once a month. In Aarhus, the courts are cheapest Monday to Friday between 5.00 am and 3.00 pm: 178 kr. per hour for a doubles court, 44.50 kr. per person when there are four of you. If you play regularly during those hours, the ‘Weekday Play’ package costs 169 kr. a month — less than a single hour’s court hire.

Working out in Aarhus: how much it costs

Both Jonas Kruse and Aitor coach at Padel Lounge Aarhus. Hire of the padel court is included in the price, and there can be up to four participants per session.

Time periodPrice
All times on weekdays, except Monday–Thursday, 3 pm–10 pm400 kr.
Weekend500 kr.

If you’ve never played before, a couple of hours with a coach right from the start is worth more than ten hours of figuring it out on your own. If you’re an experienced player, one-to-one or one-to-two sessions are the quickest way to correct the habits that are holding you back.
