Bandeja: how to maintain your position in the net

The bandeja is a controlled overhead shot, often used when opponents lob the ball over you at the net. The aim is typically to keep them on the back foot and get back into net position. The shot is therefore a different choice from a smash, which is intended to win the point.

Choose the right tray for the situation

A bandeja makes sense when you can get behind the ball and hit it whilst balanced. If the lob is very deep, it may be better to let the ball bounce and use the backboard. Forcing an overhead whilst moving backwards often results in poor control.

The battle, step by step

  1. Read the lob early, turn your body and start moving your feet.
  2. Create some space between your body and the ball. Avoid letting the ball come straight over your head.
  3. Prepare the bat so that the stroke can be executed without a frantic swing.
  4. A well-controlled shot, focusing on the height above the crossbar and aiming for the top corner.
  5. Regain your balance and move forward with your partner, if the exchange allows time.

Where should the ball go?

Start from the centre or a large area deep in the court. A narrow angle close to the net can be effective, but requires greater precision. Depth alone is not enough either: a shot that is too hard can easily bounce off the glass and give your opponent a good return.

Three mistakes to watch out for

Too much power: You’ll lose your bearings and fall far behind. Late movement: The point of contact ends behind the body. A quick way forward: You’re running towards the net before you know whether your opponent will get an easy ball.

A low-pressure exercise

A partner hits ten gentle lobs that you can reach without sprinting. Play the ball towards a large target and come to a balanced stop after the shot. Focus on controlled shots rather than winners. Then add a gentle return so that you also practise getting back to your net position.
