Before your first padel tournament: 9 things to help you

Your first padel tournament will seem less daunting once you’re familiar with the format, the level of play and the practical arrangements. You don’t need to play flawlessly. The aim could be to play some good matches, get to know new players and work out what you want to focus on next.

Nine things to keep on top of

  1. Level description: Choose a tournament that suits your level of experience, and ask the organiser if you’re in any doubt.
  2. The format: Check whether there are fixed teams or rotating partners, and whether the points are awarded to the team or the individual.
  3. Meeting time: Come along for the briefing and warm-up – don’t just turn up for the first serve.
  4. Equipment: Check your shoes, bat and safety cord, and find out who’s bringing the balls.
  5. The scoring rules: Know the duration of the matches, the order of service and the rules in the event of a tie.
  6. The role of the partner: Agree on short calls and a simple way of splitting the middle.
  7. Food and drink: Bring something you’re used to, in case the event goes on for a long time.
  8. Breaks: Use them to take a breather and find your next course, so you don’t fall behind.
  9. Your own goal: Choose something you can influence, such as getting more returns in the game.

Keep it simple in the first few matches

Start with plenty of space over the net and aim high. Nerves can make an otherwise safe shot difficult. Calm shots down the middle and clear communication will help you get into the match. Hold off on the riskiest shots until you’ve found your rhythm.

Ask if anything is unclear

An organised tournament may have specific rules regarding scoring, time limits and the end of the match. Consult the organiser rather than introducing new rules on the course. In social games, it is also important that the result is recorded correctly before the next round.

After the tournament

Make a note of one thing that went well and one thing you want to practise. The final result also depends on your partners and opponents; the lessons you’ve learnt from your serve, shots and positioning can be put to immediate use in your next training session.
